DIY Christmas Tree Place Cards

Stephen doesn’t let me decorate for Christmas before Thanksgiving. However, we’re are pre-transitioning at our house from fall to Christmas decor this week, so come Friday I can be in full-blown Christmas mode! I’m so excited. (To be fair, he did pop in Elf last night, so he’s excited too!) I feel like our house is happiest at Christmas. Everything is lit up and glittery. Plus, this is our first year with a house, so we are decorating outside! I just can’t wait.

To get a head start on my tablescape, Stephen and I crafted these Christmas tree place cards to match our Spode. They were incredible easy to make and are so stinking cute. Oh BONUS! I spent less than $20 on supplies to make these. It would have been less, but I could only find a 5 quart bag of fake snow. A smaller one would have been cheaper.. But now all my decor is getting a little dusting this year. Silver lining?

P.S. have I mentioned how much I love my husband? He jumps on board with all my shenanigans. He tagged along as I ran all over the place to find the items I needed to make these, AND when they weren’t exactly what I had in mind, he MacGyvered them until they were perfect. He is truly just my favorite person on the planet.

Ok back to my place cards. Here’s a little tutorial on how to make them!

Things you’ll need:

  • Mini glass jars with a cork lid (Michael’s or Hobby Lobby will have exactly what you need!)
  • Mini Christmas trees (the dollhouse section at a crafting store is a gold mine for these!)
  • Fake snow (Again, Michaels or Hobby Lobby!)
  • Super glue
  • Place card picks (See below how we made this work.) You can buy them ahead of time on Amazon.
  • Place cards (Check out the wedding section at any store.)

How to make them:

-Glue the bottom of the mini tree onto the bottom of the glass. We, of course, bought everything but glue. So I used double stick tape. It worked fine though.  Just place a little dab of glue on the base of your tree, slide into the jar, and press firmly against the bottom for like 10 seconds.

-Pour a small amount of fake snow into the jar. I HIGHLY recommend you do this over a sink, and preferably use a funnel. We kind of just went with the “wing it” theory. It worked fine, but a funnel would have come in clutch.

-Use a thin utensil to push the snow to the bottom, or just smack the jar a lot til it shakes down. It’s ok if some of the snow stays on the tree, but just try and get it all off of the jar and down to the bottom. You want the glass to be clear so you can focus on your tree.

-If you have a place card pick, pop it into the cork lid. If you do not, buy a standing place card and use a wire cutter to clip it at the length you want. Hubbs took care of this part because I have the attention span of a goldfish and got frustrated that I couldn’t cut them on the first try.

-Write your names on the cards, put them in the holders and put the cork back on the bottle. I went with marble looking place cards because I have a marble dome I like to use when decorating, but white or gold or anything would be pretty. You can even design your own!

TA-DA! Super super easy and SO cute. I am getting the items for my tablescape ready this week so that when this weekend rolls around I can put it all together. I’m so excited about these and I will have another little detail post coming up soon.

What do you think of my place cards? What is your favorite part of the pre-Christmas preparation?

  • Oh my gosh!! These are super cute! Usually my husband is on team “don’t decorate until after Thanksgiving,” but we’ve been watching Christmas movies on the Hallmark Channel since November 1.
