Plan Your Own 1920’s Wine Pairing

I love book club. A few of my pals and I take turns choosing the book and hosting it at our home. This month, we did “Tales of the Jazz Age” by F. Scott Fitzgerald who also wrote “The Great Gatsby.” This is a collection of his short stories including “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” I created a 1920’s themed wine pairing and found the perfect brand new wine called “Notable.”  

This product launched in March of this year and is the only wine of it’s kind that features the flavor profile on the bottle, so what you see is what you sip! This makes it super easy to find tasty bites to perfectly complement the chardonnay.

So today, I thought I would share my recipes and decor to create the perfect 1920’s wine pairing party.

First I planned my menu of appetizers. Notable has two flavors of chardonnay, an Australian that has a citrus fruity flavor and a Californian with more of a oak and butter taste. Chardonnay pairs well with brie, seafood, nuts, hard cheeses, fruit, etc. and I wanted nibbles that would complement the chardonnay taste and both flavor profiles.

So I planned a baked brie with honey crust, a cheese and fruit tray, shrimp and avocado cups, cheddar and onion biscuits, and dark chocolate (which technically goes with red wine, but I’m not even trying to hear that. Everyone needs dark chocolate.)

Here are a few of my recipes:

Baked Brie
Brie (pick one that fits in your hand)
Two rolls of crescent dough
One egg

1) Preheat over to 350 degrees.
2) Roll out one container of dough on ungreased cookie sheet. Make sure all perforations are merged together.
3) Place brie on dough.
4) If you want to get fancy, cut out little shapes on the four corners and set aside.
5) Place second roll of dough over the brie and press firmly around the edges.
6) Fold bottom layer over both bottom layer and brie.
7) Beat one egg and brush egg wash over the exterior.
8) Place little shapes on top.
9.) Brush egg wash again.
10.) Bake for 20-25 minutes and serve warm.
11.) Drizzle crust with honey.

Cheddar Onion Chive Biscuits
1 can refrigerated biscuits
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
2 teaspoons onions minced
Chives for taste

1) Preheat oven to 375 degrees
2) Slice biscuit dough in half and sprinkle with cheese and onions, replace top.
3) Place biscuits on an ungreased 9″ round pan
4) Sprinkle top with cheddar cheese and chives to taste
5) Bake for 14-16 minutes

After my menu, I planned my decor. I went with a musical/jazz theme and gold accessories. First step was to create this adorable trumpet centerpiece. I was super easy to create. I purchased a plastic trumpet and white ostrich feathers, then glued the feathers around the rim. Voila, perfect 1920’s piece.

I also purchased some musical note garland to use as a runner for a few platters. Then I purchased some fake pearl necklaces and cut them to make strands to swirl in and out between the platters. Of course, I needed a music note wine stopper to complete the look!

Final “note,” (Get it? I try to be punny) National Chardonnay Day is May 21! Time to get party planning! What are you doing to celebrated the best holiday of the year?? I recommend picking up a bottle of Notable wine. It is SO tasty and having the flavor notes on the bottle is a huge help when planning a menu!
